Hi there! I’m Katie! I’m the youngest of 8 kids, homeschooling mama of 4 little women, foster mama to 1 older one, wife to biologist Dr. Van, former missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina, English & Spanish speaker and former German speaker (but I want to get it back!). I’m a brain tumor survivor, trained Doula/Birth Companion, USU Master Gardener Volunteer, Crafter/Quilter/novice seamstress, budding mural painter, avid learner & reader, Mental Health Advocate, Cook, Baker, experimenter, lover of outside, yoga, and dancing, and critter lover. Owner currently of 19 different pets of 5 different species. I love music and choral singing is a special passion. I love people and places and storytelling and I am passionate about cooking and eating good food, especially when I can share it with those I love. I feel like food connects us. Everyone needs to eat. Food is a key part of our celebrations, our mourning, our cultures, our religions, our families, our traditions, our holidays, our expressions of love, and our lives.
For some “food is fuel”, but for me and those I love its so much more. At a time when there is so very much division in our world because of race, ethnicity, politics and more, connecting through cooking, eating, stories and food is more important than ever.
I have never been to India, Thailand, Africa, or Afghanistan but I LOVE the food from those countries and feel a connection to them and their people without having visited. I grew up in a community in Columbia, Maryland full of religious, ethnic and cultural diversity. I am grateful for the exposure I had to different religions, holidays, foods, traditions and people. I also want to share recipes with you in a way that gives you confidence to try new things, cook food unfamiliar to you that’s easy to customize to different diets, and know how to do it successfully! I hope to share some of the gratitude and love I have for food through the recipes and stories I share here and that we all can feel a little more love, generosity and connection as we cook and eat together. Welcome to Katie Cooks and Shares!
